Common Breast Concerns

Breasts offer function, shape and beauty, but along with those can also come tenderness, discharge, lumps, soreness and, of course, sagging. Read on to learn more about the top breast concerns among women. Breast Pain: General breast pain is the top reason women consult their doctors, according to American Family Physician, and can result from pre-menstrual water retention, stress, medications, menopause, muscle strains, cysts and masses and several other causes, making it challenging to pinpoint. Regardless of the pain, if it persists, talk to your doctor. She may send you for a mammogram, prescribe medication or vitamins, advise you to cut out caffeine or make a few dietary shifts, or offer other recommendations for reducing the pain. A good bra that fits well can also offer the support your breasts need. Cysts/Lumps: While monthly hormonal fluctuations can change the feel of your breasts, you should call your doctor if you detect an unusual lump or mass. If you’re 30 or younger and find a lump before your period, you may be asked to repeat the breast exam after your period, since cysts are often linked with your cycle. The good news is that 80 percent of breast lumps are benign, according to the National Cancer Institute, but it’s worth determining if the lump is a simple cyst or benign tumor that can easily be addressed or something that requires a further look.

Sagging: The Cooper’s ligaments, which help hold breasts in place, get stretched over time; meanwhile, the decrease of collagen and elastin in the skin, hormonal changes, pregnancy and breastfeeding also contribute to breast sagging. While you can’t tone your breasts, you can use push-ups and strength training to focus on your pectoral muscles. In addition, don’t wear your sports bras for decades – make sure they offer you the support you need – and get fitted for a bra that supports you day in and out. Inverted Nipples: Some women have nipples that pull in or invert on occasion, particularly after breastfeeding. If your nipples suddenly start to invert and you’re not breastfeeding, give your doctor a call. Discharge: While nipple discharge is both normal and common, if breast discharge contains blood or appears when the nipples aren’t squeezed, set up an appointment with your doctor. Discharge can be due to noncancerous growths in the breast ducts or a condition called spontaneous milk flow, and also appears in a small percentage of women with breast cancer. And if you’re ever in doubt about any breast concerns, please give Clinic Sofia a call to discuss the issue or set up an appointment.
