How to Survive the Loss of a Loved One
While loss and death are a part of every life, that doesn’t make them any easier. The following tips can offer guidance in the wake of a loss: Give yourself time to grieve. You don’t have to put a deadline on grief; give yourself the time you need to experience the loss. At the same time, it’s important to maintain the things in your life—activities, friends and interests—that matter to you and give you a reason to smile. Regular exercise can also boost feel-good hormones and decrease feelings of depression.
Spend time with family and friends. This isn’t the time to go it alone and show everyone how strong and independent you are. Ask for help when you need it and spend time with the people who make you feel good. Seek out others who have experienced a similar loss. You might also want to find a therapist who can help you discuss your loss and relationship objectively. Likewise, books, DVDs and websites can offer advice, resources and support. Sleep. Sleep is good for the mind, body and soul. Sleep, r&r and several deep breaths can help calm your nervous system and provide the energy you need.
