A back-to-fall routine for adults

No matter what your age, fall probably reminds you of the back-to-school routine: New supplies and clothes, a fresh slate, the chance to learn something new.

If you’re wistful for these days, the good news is that everyone can start fresh this season. In fact, adults can benefit just as much as kids from a back-to-fall reset and routine.

“What do you want to change in your life right now? Is there anything you want to add or subtract? A new season is the perfect opportunity to update your routines, your goals and your plans for the year,” said Dr. Amy Hammers. “Think of it as back-to-school for grown-ups. You can even buy yourself a new backpack!”

What might a seasonal reset look like for adults?

  • Schedule any appointments that need to be made for the rest of the year. This might include doctor and dental appointments, an oil change, a haircut or a visit to your accountant.
  • Make time for selfcare. Summer can be incredibly busy and fall gives us the chance to take a deep breath and slow down. What do you need to enhance your self-care regimen? Whether it’s a massage, a weekly walk with a friend or simply a few more moments to yourself, do what you can to carve out this precious time.
  • Tweak your diet and exercise. If summer was all about ice cream and vacations, then maybe fall is more about fresh produce and hiking, for example. You don’t have to make massive changes to benefit from a few small updates to your nutrition and exercise plans.
  • Donate winter clothes. Do you have a bag of last year’s clothes that you still need to donate? This is the perfect time to bring in winter coats, hats and gloves as well as sweaters, pants and boots. Clear the clutter and do good!
  • Review and reflect. The slower days of fall give us the opportunity to reflect back on the year so far, update any goals or priorities, and renew your commitment to a great 2022. What key milestones have you accomplished so far? What is yet to come?
