Endometriosis 101
Painful menstruation. Low back or abdominal pain. Pain during sex. Endometriosis, a disorder where the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus begins to grow outside of the uterus, often makes itself known through pelvic pain. The tissue attaches to other organs and acts as normal – which means breaking down and bleeding during each period. However, the tissue lacks a way to leave the body, which can lead to severe pain.
Beyond monthly discomfort, endometriosis can also lead to infertility and is most common for women in their 30s and 40s, when fertility naturally begins to decrease. Endometriosis can either damage the sperm or egg, or obstruct the fallopian tubes and prevent the sperm and egg and from reaching each other. While endometriosis can’t be cured, it can be treated, and women with endometriosis can conceive.

Treatment options for endometriosis include over-the-counter pain relievers, hormone therapy (including birth control for women not trying to get pregnant), topical oils and surgery. Warm baths and exercise can also help with monthly discomfort.
