Common Questions About Breast Health

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to answer some of your most pressing questions about breast health: Why do my breasts hurt? Breasts can be sore for a variety of reasons, including hormonal changes related to pregnancy, your period or menopause. If they remain painful, however, schedule a visit with your doctor. Is it normal to have asymmetricalbreasts? Yes. In most women, one breast will be larger than the other and this is completely normal. Are underwire bras dangerous at all? Despite the rumors to the contrary, there is no evidence that underwire bras can increase the risk of breast cancer. If, however, you prefer a wireless bra, shop for one that  provides ample support.

What are the warning signs of breast cancer? Be on the lookout for any change in the appearance or texture of your breasts that is unrelated to pregnancy, breastfeeding or your monthly cycle. You may also find  a lump while doing a monthly breast exam, notice dimpling of the skin, redness of the skin over the breast or change in breast density. Schedule an appointment with your doctor if you detect any of these potential signs. When do I schedule my first mammogram? The American Cancer Society recommends that women have their first annual mammogram at age 40. Read on to learn more about your first mammogram. If you have any other questions about breast health, breast cancer, normal changes in the breasts or anything else  related to your health, we would be happy to discuss them with you.
