Loving your postpartum body

When you have a baby, pretty much everything changes—including your postpartum body. From cracked nipples to extra skin to swollen ankles, these changes may feel foreign and confusing.

“All of this is totally normal! We see celebrities who are back in a bikini a couple weeks after giving birth, but this is a pretty distorted view of postpartum bodies,” said Dr. Pamela Jordi. “There is a reason they call it the ‘fourth trimester.’ You spent the past 40 weeks or so growing another human being in your body and you deserve all the patience in the world as you adjust to parenthood.”

Some women recommend writing a “love letter” to their postpartum body to honor its beauty and abilities. Other tips for finding more love and less judgement include:

  • Focus on the positive. Is your hair thicker? Do you like your curvier silhouette? Or maybe you appreciate the fact that your body is amazing and can manage everything from pregnancy to childbirth to breastfeeding. You might come up with a positive affirmation such as “my body is strong and sensitive and amazing” to repeat to yourself when you need a boost.
  • Treat your body well. As they say “your body is a temple.” Treat it that way. Focus on nourishing food, lots of fluids and regular movement. And, of course, give yourself ample time for rest when you can get it.
  • Share your journey. It takes a village when it comes to parenting and your village can be a big source of support and encouragement. Share your struggles and successes with friends who will cheer you on no matter what. Some women like to photograph their body in all its stages as a reminder of where they are and where they’ve been.
  • Dress for success. Whether you’re wearing maternity clothes or not, dress comfortably so you can move, bend and get down on the floor with your baby. Wear things that make you feel good. Consider supportive nursing bras, comfortable leggings and looser fabrics.

Loving your postpartum body may not happen overnight, but it’s definitely worth the effort and attention. Try to give yourself the same love and compassion you share with your family and celebrate all of those milestones.
