Ask Sofia: Is it possible to prevent preeclampsia in a second pregnancy?
Preeclampsia – a condition that only occurs during pregnancy – can be life-threatening for both mom and baby. Typically leading to high blood pressure that can cause seizures and strokes as well as organ failure, preeclampsia affects about five to eight percent of first-time moms.
Getting Help with Infertility
During National Infertility Awareness Week, we want to remind those of you in our Clinic Sofia community who may be struggling with getting pregnant that you are not alone. About 1 in 8 couples struggle with infertility yet so many are uncomfortable speaking up and seeking help. At Clinic Sofia, we see a lot of couples having difficulty getting pregnant based on a wide range of factors.
The Importance of Folic Acid
While most people recognize that folic acid is important when you’re pregnant, this B vitamin is actually essential for all of us. While it is particularly critical when you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, folic acid supports growth and development in the body – supporting your overall health.
Ask Sofia: I have an IUD – why am I bleeding?
More women are turning to IUDs, or intrauterine devices, for longer-term contraception that is both effective and convenient, yet are sometimes surprised when they still see bleeding or spotting monthly. After an IUD is inserted, it is normal to have some breakthrough bleeding over the next few days and weeks.
Coping with Repeated Miscarriage
Suffering through one miscarriage can be devastating. Multiple or recurrent miscarriages, defined as the loss of two or three consecutive pregnancies, can challenge even the strongest and most optimistic women and couples. While the causes of miscarriage are not always clear, challenges such as uterine issues, hormonal imbalances, cervical weakness, and blood-clotting issues or infections can often be addressed. The heartening news is that most women who have a miscarriage will go on to have a healthy pregnancy.
