Cooling Off Hot Flashes

As the temperatures heat up, your friends and family might be doing cartwheels while you might be inwardly groaning. If menopause or perimenopause has you sweating and ripping off layers regardless of the weather outside, the following tips can help you cool down this summer:

  • Cool down literally. Whether it’s ice on your wrist or neck, snacking on frozen fruit or a refrigerated baby wipe, cool items and foods can provide immediate, short-term relief.
  • Layer it on. When you wear layers, you can take them on and off at will. Likewise, natural fibers provide more breathing room than synthetic ones.
  • Exercise. While movement that heats up your body might seem counterintuitive, several studies have shown that exercise can reduce hot flashes and headaches and boost quality of life (while also reducing insomnia and weight gain). Try moderate exercise such as walking, swimming, and yoga. Deep breaths can also feel good and help you relax.
  • Drink up. Water that is. Staying hydrated is critical. And avoid hot, spicy foods that make you sweat.
  • Get the flax. A small study from the Mayo Clinic indicated that women who consumed 40 grams of ground flaxseed per day reduced hot flashes; add flax seed to cereal, salads, or smoothies.

Although they may not feel like it at the time, the good news is that hot flashes are temporary. If you are not getting relief with these easy remedies, schedule an appointment with our menopause experts to find out what other options are available to improve your quality of life.
