Routine Exams at Clinic Sofia
A routine healthcare exam – generally recommended annually – is an important component of preventative care. Your appointment may inclue:
- Pap Test
- Pelvic Exam
- Breast Exam
- Wellness Discussion
- Contraception Discussion
- Sexually Transmitted Infection screening (if appropriate)
- Assessment of height, weight, and blood pressure
First Time Gynecology Appointments
The first appointment to the gynecologist can be intimidating. However, it can also be an exciting time to empower a young person in their current and future health. Your caregivers are sensitive to your apprehension and curiosity. We take the time to not only perform an exam, but to educate and nurture the young people in our care. We consider it an honor to help set the healthcare course for young people in our community.
Your caregiver will explain what you can expect during the exam. They will ask questions about your health and lifestyle, check your height, weight and blood pressure, and perform a breast and pelvic exam if deemed appropriate based on shared decision-making. Before your exam, think of any concerns you may be having that you’d like to address.
Regular exams are important for early detection or prevention of problems. A thorough exam includes open, honest communication. Clinic Sofia is a safe environment, where you are welcome to voice your concerns or ask questions. We are here to help you.
Referral for Outside Mammogram
Sofia recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. If you have a significant family history of breast cancer, it may be recommended to begin mammograms earlier. Your caregiver will discuss your family history with you to determine an appropriate age at which to begin having regular mammograms.
Caregivers do not perform mammograms at the Clinic Sofia office, but we will refer you to a certified center. Clinic Sofia will analyze the results with medical expertise and help you receive treatment if needed.
Referral for Outside Colonoscopy
Unless there is a family history of colon polyps or colon cancer, we recommend screening colonoscopies starting at age 45 and repeated every ten years. This procedure is performed after a bowel prep and with sedation.
Clinic Sofia does not perform colonoscopies in office, but we will refer you to a certified clinic, then we analyze the results and help you get the treatment you need.
