Clinic Sofia currently provides several gynecological surgical procedures to accommodate your healthcare needs. Many of these are minimally invasive procedures, which means that they often cause less pain and scarring with a quicker recovery.
Laparoscopy
A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure. Laparoscopic incisions are very small, usually a few milimeters in length. There may be many scenarios in which your caregiver will perform a laparoscopy. If you need a laparoscopy, your provider will use small tools to remove cysts, scar tissue, endometriosis, or other problems. It may also help your caregiver diagnose infertility by checking your fallopian tubes. A laparoscopy is done under general anesthesia at the hospital.
Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a safe way to look inside the uterus without any incisions to detect problems such as fibroids, polyps, or the cause of miscarriages. Your caregiver will insert a thin tube with a light on the end into the vagina. Women with abnormal bleeding may have this procedure to find the cause, but hysteroscopy may be used in other situations such as multiple miscarriages or sterilization. This procedure is performed in the office or the hospital, depending on your medical history and needs.
LEEP Procedure
The LEEP procedure involves using a small wire loop connected to cautery, to remove a small portion of the cervix that contains abnormal cells. If left untreated, these abnormal cells could progress into cancer of the cervix. LEEP procedures are usually performed in the Clinic Sofia office.
Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a procedure done via hysteroscopy to destroy the uterine lining while the uterus itself remains intact. It can reduce or even eliminate period bleeding for those struggling with very heavy periods. Endometrial ablation is typically performed in the hospital.
Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus. Removal of the fallopian tubes is often recommended as well due to its role in future ovarian cancer risk reduction. The ovaries may or may not be removed as well, depending on your needs and circumstances. This decision is always made between the patient and caregiver. If you need a hysterectomy, Clinic Sofia provides vaginal, abdominal, and minimally invasive approaches. Clinic Sofia is proud that some of our physicians perform minimally invasive hysterectomy using the da Vinci robot, which offers 3D high-definition vision and function.
