What Happens at a Prenatal Visit

You’ve seen the plus sign or the little blue line on the at-home pregnancy test. What’s next? It’s time to call your doctor to set up your first prenatal visit. Regular prenatal care throughout your pregnancy will focus on both health and education – for you and your growing baby. You will likely see your doctor about 15 times during your pregnancy, and the first visit is the longest, since you will discuss: –Your due date! Based on your cycle and most recent period, your doctor will estimate your due date, giving you time for some prenatal planning; –Your overall health and medical history, including previous pregnancies, current medications, any allergies, plus habits such as healthy eating and exercise, smoking and alcohol use, and family history; –The importance of prenatal vitamins and care; –What to expect along the way to 40 weeks;

Morning sickness, fatigue and other pregnancy symptoms; –What to eat and drink, and what to avoid; –Recommendations on overall weight gain and prenatal care; –Prenatal testing; — Sex and relationships; –And any questions you may have about pregnancy, labor and delivery, and your overall health. You will have a physical (to chart height, weight, blood pressure, breast health and more) plus a pelvic exam. Further visits will focus on your baby’s development, including ultrasounds where you’ll get to see your little one in action, as well as your health and wellness. Your partner, friends and loved ones are also welcome to join you in this journey.
