Preventative care in 2020

Preventative care is always important. Doctor’s visits, screenings and vaccinations are all designed to support your health and prevent disease. This year, however, preventative care is even more critical than ever. Experts hope to prevent a “twindemic” of flu and Covid-19 and many illnesses have symptoms that can be confused for coronavirus, underscoring the need to make health a top priority this year.

“At Clinic Sofia, we aim to support women and their families throughout every stage. As the pandemic continues, our focus on staying healthy is stronger than ever, which is why we take so many measures to keep our clinic a safe and welcoming place,” said Dr. Erin Stevens. “We encourage you to schedule your annual visits and get your flu shots as we head into fall and winter.”

Flu shots are now available at Clinic Sofia. Safe during any trimester of pregnancy, they are egg- and thimerosal-free. A flu shot can be added to any appointment or scheduled separately.

On the whole, preventative care includes an annual doctor’s visit, fall flu shot, any lapsed vaccinations, blood pressure and cholesterol tests, screenings that may include mammograms/colonoscopies/diabetes, counseling on personal topics ranging from smoking to eating healthy to depression, as well as well-child visits for the younger members of your household.

While doctor’s visits are an important component, what you do when you’re away from the office matters even more: Eat ample servings of fruits and vegetables, and focus on whole grains and organic sources of protein. Take a multivitamin. Move your body every day. Ease into sleep with a screen-free routine. And take the time to appreciate how much your body already does for you.
