Natural Ways to Treat Your Next Headache

Headaches are a pain in the neck, literally! They can also be tricky to diagnose, since there are many types of headaches and even more causes,” said Dr. Jewelia Wagner. “However, it’s definitely worth getting to the bottom of whatever is causing you pain, and we are always happy to take a closer look.”

It’s National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month, and if you’re among the half to three-quarters of adults who have suffered a headache in the past month, you might be seeking new or more effective treatment options. Please call 9-1-1 if you have a sudden, severe headache or one accompanied by confusion, high fever, numbness or weakness on one side of the body, as well as difficulty seeing/speaking/walking. Likewise, you should see your doctor if your headaches are occurring more often than normal or are more severe than usual or if you have headaches that keep you from sleeping, working or daily activities.

On the other hand, if your headaches are more sporadic, but still a nuisance, the following natural remedies can be of help:

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. A surprising number of headaches occur because of dehydration, particularly this time of year. Make sure you are well-hydrated, which can also stave off the irritation and poor focus that often come along with dehydration.
  • Try a cold pack. An ice pack (or even a bag of frozen peas) on your forehead, neck or other affected areas can help ease pain by reducing inflammation. Try the cold pack for 15 minutes.
  • Relax, stretch and breathe. Deep breathing, yoga and progressive muscle relaxation can all reduce stress and tension while stretching out tight, achy muscles. Massaging pressure points can also feel good and relieve tension headaches. All of these exercises can relax the mind as well as the body, which can also help.
  • Find a quiet, dark room. Some headaches are brought on by too much stimulus – strong smells, harsh lights, loud noises. Sometimes a cool, quiet room can help you slow down and calm down. Cutting down on screen time can also reduce headache-inducing eye strain.
  • Caffeinate. While this might seem contrary to hydration and relaxation, caffeine is included in some pain medications as it can relax the blood vessels, increasing circulation and reducing tension. (Pay attention to the time of day and start small with this one!)
  • Exercise. Again, take it easy if you have a powerful headache, but movement and exercise can release feel-good endorphins to counteract headaches. Walk, bike, swim,

It might also be worthwhile to try an elimination diet or get tested for food allergies, which can also cause headaches and other issues, and to take a good daily multivitamin and 600 milligrams of magnesium. Limiting alcohol and ensuring a steady sleep schedule can also be your friends when it comes to reducing or eliminating headaches.
