Hospitalization decreases 94% with Covid-19 vaccine
If you are on the fence about the Covid-19 vaccine, the CDC recently shared some good news that might encourage you to schedule an appointment: Adults 65 and up were a full 94 percent less likely to be hospitalized after receiving either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccination.
“It’s wonderful to see these real-world results that come from vaccination,” said Dr. Jewelia Wagner. “This news and other vaccine studies are incredibly encouraging, especially when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us and showing just how effective these vaccines really are.”
The risk of severe illness with Covid-19 increases along with age, however, vaccines can prevent both illness and the need for hospitalization. This study examined two hospital networks spanning 14 states and 24 hospitals with more studies on vaccine effectiveness and assessments to come.
The CDC continues to recommend that everyone age 16 and up in the United States get vaccinated as soon as possible. As of May 1, 44 percent of Minnesotans were fully vaccinated and nearly 58 percent had received their first dose, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. “When you look back at the last 14 months from a healthcare perspective, it’s pretty amazing how far we have come from identifying the virus in our country to plentiful vaccines,” added Dr. Wagner. “The latest studies are simply another step in the right direction.”
