Beating Depression

Since depression comes in all shapes and sizes – postpartum depression, the winter blues and depression that arises due to a specific situation, for example – beating depression is never a one-treatment-fits-all cure.

If you are suffering from depression – whether it’s been a long-term issue or a recent challenge – it’s important to recognize that you are not alone. It is also critical to take an active role in your treatment, even when you don’t feel like it.

“The more honest you are about your situation and the more involved you are in your treatment, the better,” said Dr. Donna Block, founder of Clinic Sofia. “We can offer an open door and open ears and a variety of resources to help you battle depression, seasonal affective disorder or whatever challenge you are facing right now. Acknowledging and addressing depression is the first step towards feeling better.”

If you are struggling with depression:

  • Ask for help. Talk to a friend or family member, a doctor or therapist who can help you take the steps you need. Depression can feel very isolating, so it’s important to connect with others who care for you.
  • Take care of yourself. Depression can affect more than your mental health, it can also negatively influence your physical health. Focus on eating well – trying to avoid alcohol, sugar and caffeine if you find it makes your mind race. Exercise can reduce the symptoms of depression, so find a way to move your body on a regular basis. Soaking up some sunlight and other self-care rituals that help you feel a little better from the inside out can also enhance your overall wellness.
  • If you are on medication, be patient. Antidepressants can take up to six weeks to be effective. Likewise, you might need to try different medications until you find the right one for you. Don’t stop taking medication without talking to your doctor and let him or her know if something isn’t working for you.
  • Start a joy journal. Rather than focusing on the dark side, take a few minutes each day to record three to five joys – people, places, experiences, moments that you are grateful for.
  • Never give up. No matter how bad you’re feeling and no matter what you’re going through, recognize that depression is treatable and it does not need to be a permanent feature in your life. Never give up on yourself or the others in your life who care for you.
