Ask Sofia: What are the Signs of Endometriosis?

The signs of endometriosis, where the uterine lining begins to grow outside the uterus, can include painful menstruation, low back pain, discomfort during intercourse, fatigue and gastrointestinal issues – all of which can be mistaken for other issues such as fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease or irritable bowel syndrome.

“It is important to recognize that killer periods, intense low back or abdominal discomfort, and pain during sex are not normal,” said Dr. Amy Hammers of Clinic Sofia. “If you are suffering, please let us know and speak up. We are here to discuss anything that is concerning or bothering you and to help you determine if it is related to endometriosis or something else.”

March is National Endometriosis Awareness Month, an event that is designed to recognize the millions of women struggling with endometriosis, ensure quicker diagnosis, and address issues such as infertility and pain.

“Whether this is a new condition or something you have been dealing with for a while, we are always here to discuss your symptoms and potential treatment options,” Dr. Hammers added. “You are not alone and should never have to suffer in silence.”
