Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Shining a light for moms and families, on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in every time zone across the world, a wave of candle light will honor Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day to “remember our babies.” On that day and throughout Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in October, Clinic Sofia offers support and resources for anyone who has experienced a miscarriage, loss of an infant, stillbirth or ectopic pregnancy.

“Losing a baby is one of the hardest things for a woman and a family to experience, and it’s also one of the hardest things to talk about. We are here to support women during every life stage and circumstance, through both the happy events and the sad, and to provide the resources that they need during and after such a profound loss,” said Dr. Donna Block.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month was created so families and friends could come together to grieve, reach out, share memories and reflect.

While as many as 30 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage, a pregnancy or infant loss doesn’t mean that you can’t or shouldn’t get pregnant again. Many women have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies following a loss, and doctors can do additional testing and counseling to help support this goal. In addition, there are more resources than ever for grieving moms and families. Pregnancy & Postpartum Support Minnesota, for example, offers a list of resources to remind women that they don’t have to suffer or go it alone. Likewise, workshops, social media groups and other organizations can provide help for women and families following a loss.

“No matter what, it is so important to remember that you are still and always a mom,” Dr. Block added.
