Ask Sofia: How Do I Know if I Have Fibroids?

“I’ve heard of fibroids and am wondering if I have them…how do I know if I have fibroids?” Benign lumps that grow on the uterus, fibroids can be as small as a seed or as large as a grapefruit. As many as 20 percent of women experience fibroids – typically between the ages of 30 to 50 – which may be caused by hormonal or genetic factors. The most common symptoms for fibroids are heavy periods and cramping, backache, frequent urination and/or constipation, painful sex, leg pain and discomfort or even swelling in the lower belly.

“If you have several of these symptoms and they are affecting your day-to-day life, then consulting with your doctor can definitely provide more information and options for you,” said Dr. Jewelia Wagner. Fibroids are often discovered during a vaginal exam or ultrasound. Treatment for fibroids can include nothing (if they aren’t overly disruptive to your life), since the symptoms often ease or disappear with menopause, as well as medication or surgery as needed. If you’re still wondering and are concerned about fibroids, schedule an appointment and we’d be happy to provide more information for you.
