Spring Cleaning for the Soul

It’s that time of year: Clean out the closets, shake out the rugs and clear out the clutter. Spring cleaning your house has a host of benefits – you create more space, eliminate allergens and get rid of things you no longer use.

But it doesn’t have to end there. “Spring cleaning for the soul” can take this seasonal renewal to the next level. If you’re interested in taking spring cleaning a little further, here are a few suggestions for refreshing your life this spring:

  • Take inventory. Just like you go through your drawers and closets to see what should stay and what should go, you can do this with your mental and emotional life. Are there toxic relationships weighing you down? Or a friend you need to reconnect with? Is there a New Year’s resolution you’d love to return to? Something that you’ve wanted to learn or explore? Notice what needs more — or less – attention in your life and take action accordingly.
  • Let go of negative thoughts. Next time you find yourself thinking or saying “I can’t,” try to reframe that thought with “I could” or “I will.” This simple shift in language can be empowering and create some positive momentum.
  • Reduce distractions. Social media, reality TV, overly busy schedules and more can make our minds cluttered and exhausted. What distractions can you trim or eliminate to make space for more of what you want and need in your life?
  • Focus on creativity. You don’t have to paint a masterpiece or write a bestseller, but small acts of creativity can spark your soul and create moments of joy. Take a pottery class, walk a new route with your neighbor or try writing a Haiku.
  • Return to gratitude. No matter what the season or reason, gratitude reminds us of the good things, grounds us and enhances our relationships. Take a few minutes each day to remind yourself what and who you’re grateful for – and then share the news.

“Spring cleaning can take many forms,” said Dr. Amy Hammers. “Sometimes the house is just the first step. When you take even a little time to declutter your mind, refresh your goals and revitalize your body, the season can be that much more enjoyable.”
