Sexual Assault Prevention

Everyone is at risk for sexual assault. Every 107 seconds, someone in America is assaulted, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.

It can happen to anyone – women and men, young and old – but it is important to remember that it is never the victim’s fault. While it is important to be cautious in unfamiliar surroundings, in eight out of 10 cases, the victim knew the person who sexually assaulted them, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

Stay safe with the following sexual assault prevention tips:

  • You always have the right to say “no.” No matter what the situation, you can exercise your right to say “no.” This applies to sexual encounters, dating, requests for help and any other circumstance where you feel uneasy.
  • Trust your gut. If you have a bad feeling about a person or situation, listen to that intuition and leave. Always trust yourself first.
  • Keep your drink in your hand. Particularly if you’re at a party or large gathering, make sure that no one else touches your drink and has the chance to tamper with it.
  • Be aware of controlling behavior. If you’re in a relationship with someone who is excessively jealous, demeaning or controlling, recognize that these are all signs that can lead to abuse.
  • Avoid secluded places. Be mindful of your surroundings and do your best to avoid strange places after dark. Never be afraid to ask a friend or family member for a ride home.
  • Consider a selfdefense class. Many community centers offer classes in self-defense. They can teach you a few useful skills and help you feel more confident in a challenging situation.

“If you have been sexually assaulted, speak up and get help immediately. It is never, ever your fault, and it is important to take care of yourself physically and emotionally after an assault,” said Dr. Amy Hammers. “We are always here to listen and provide resources for healing.”

If you have been or are being sexually assaulted, make an escape plan immediately. Lean on your support network and find a safe place as soon as possible.
