Functional Medicine 101

We know many of our patients are interested in functional medicine and the role it may play to help them with a chronic health condition or to simply lead a healthier lifestyle.

That’s why Clinic Sofia is happy to announce that Physician Assistant Allie Nowak has completed a special certification course in functional medicine and is now available for appointments.

What is functional medicine? In essence, functional medicine integrates holistic wellness under one umbrella, with a focus on the root causes of illness and the healing properties of a healthy lifestyle. Patients who may benefit from working with Nowak include those experiencing weight gain, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, low libido, headaches, fatigue or diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, menopause, thyroid disorders or fertility issues.

“In functional medicine, we see the body as an interconnected whole, within a larger environment,” said Nowak, who will receive her certification with the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine. “We recognize that in order to treat one part of the body, all parts need to be considered.”

Nowak chose to pursue the certification as part of Clinic Sofia’s dedication to seeing patients as individuals and working together on women’s health and wellness issues as well as her own passion for integrated wellness education. The gold standard program for practical applications to enhance patient care, examine why illness occurs and focus on restoring health by looking at each individual’s needs, the Kresser Institute focuses on transforming healthcare by preventing and reducing disease.

“As someone who has been interested in wellness for many years, this has been an extremely eye-opening experience and I can’t wait to share this new perspective with our patients,” Nowak said. “When we address diet, lifestyle, environment and the mechanisms that underlie our systems, we can prevent or even reverse most chronic disease.”

If you are interested in talking with Nowak about issues such as pre-conception counseling, healthy pregnancy, digestive health and mood issues, sleep challenges or other lifestyle issues, you can call Clinic Sofia at 952.922.7600 and note that you are interested in a functional medicine consultation.

“At Clinic Sofia, we are continually focused on offering services and resources that address a woman’s entire health and wellness picture, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer more functional medicine expertise and support through Allie,” added Dr. Donna Block.
